• Jack P. Greene

  Jack P. Greene is Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities, Emeritus, Johns Hopkins University, where he was a member of the Department of History for thirty-nine years.

• Jacques Barzun

  Jacques Barzun was a French-born cultural historian who taught for many years at Columbia University. He also wrote widely on liberal education.

• John M. Robson

  Robson was a professor of English at the University of Toronto and was the chief editor of the monumental University of toronto edition of the complete works of John Stuart Mill.

• John Stuart Mill

  John Stuart Mill (1806-1873) was the precocious child of the Philosophical Radical and Benthamite James Mill. Taught Greek, Latin, and political economy at an early age, he spent his youth in the company of the Philosophic Radicals, Benthamites and utilitarians who gathered around his father James.

• Richard Price

  Richard Price was a Welsh-born liberal Presbyterian minister and moral philosopher. Price is perhaps best known for his vigorous defence of both the American and the French Revolutions. Price was both a supporter of the American desire for political independence and a sharp critic of the expenses of the British empire. His sermon on “The Love of One’s Country” in 1791 stimulated Burke into writing his famous critique of the French Revolution.
