Richard Watson
1737–1816
Bishop of Llandaff, academic, and chemist who pursued innovative scientific research and supported religious and political liberties.
Watson was an Anglican bishop and a unique figure among Enlightenment thinkers. He was deeply sympathetic to the American cause and generated much opposition from those who supported Parliamentary supremacy over the colonies.
