Portrait of Thomas Day

Thomas Day

1748–1789

English writer, lawyer, and abolitionist.

A devotee of Rousseau’s educational program, Day is known for his abolitionist political stance, which sits uneasily with his autocratic treatment of women. His stance on the American revolution varied over time, and he worked out those complications in a series of poems and pamphlets.
